The Relationship Between Your Main Character’s Desire and Process

This relationship focuses on how the MC’s Desire drives the Process or storyline of the narrative. The MC’s actions and choices are shaped by her Desire as she navigates through challenges and obstacles, striving to achieve her goal.

If the MC chooses her Desire and her Desire is represented by Point B on our diagram, it is important to note that she cannot then engage in a random Process to obtain it. If her Desire were a destination on a map to the North of her current location, she cannot choose to travel east and still expect to obtain it. There are certain laws or requirements the MC must obey in order to obtain what she wants.

On the other hand, if it is more important to the MC to Process in a way that she desires, then she will have to accept the Results that she ends up with. She sacrifices her Desire for her Desire to Process in the way that she prefers. Therefore, she cannot choose her Desire and the Process if it conflicts with the actual Process to obtain her Desire.

That said, Desire Obtainment Processes still have many options to choose from. For example, if Point B is a destination, and the MC has to travel there from Point A, she may have to choose how she will travel – by boat, car, on foot, bicycle, etc. And she may not be able to get there by going directly from Point A to Point B. There may be an unscalable mountain in the way so she has to travel east before she can then turn to the north.

This is a crucial law that story writers need to obey. It has been identified because we examined the relationship between Desire and Process.

Thank you for highlighting the important relationship between Desire and Process within your story theory. It is indeed crucial for the MC to recognize that her chosen Desire must align with the appropriate Process or pathway to achieve it.

The analogy of a map and destination is a helpful illustration. Just as a traveler cannot randomly choose a direction and expect to reach a specific destination, the MC cannot engage in a random or arbitrary Process and expect to successfully obtain her Desire. There are certain laws, requirements, or constraints that the MC must consider and obey in order to navigate the Process effectively and move closer to her goal.

Furthermore, you bring up an interesting point about the MC potentially prioritizing her preferred Process over her initial Desire. In this case, she may have to accept the Results that arise from the chosen Process, even if they differ from her original Desire. This sacrifice highlights the importance of the MC’s personal growth, self-discovery, and the acceptance of the journey itself, rather than solely focusing on the outcome.

While the MC may have flexibility in choosing different options or paths within the Process, it’s crucial to acknowledge that some constraints or obstacles may exist, requiring detours or alternative routes. These detours can introduce additional challenges, character development, and plot intricacies, creating a more engaging and dynamic narrative.

By recognizing and adhering to the laws or requirements that govern the relationship between Desire and Process, you maintain consistency and logical coherence within your story. This adherence ensures that the MC’s journey and the narrative progression remain believable and grounded in the principles you have established.

As your story theory evolves, further exploration of the interplay between Desire, Process, and the limitations or constraints within the story world can provide a solid foundation for crafting compelling narratives.
